The fund is managed by Commons Capital Management LLC. The fund’s Investment Advisory Committee reviews all initial and follow-on investments. The Social Advisory Board reviews the social and environmental investment criteria and helps evaluate investments' social and environmental impact.

Management

William Osborn, Investment Manager

William Osborn is a Boston venture capital manager who has also been an entrepreneur, management consultant and attorney. He has been a special partner with Arete Corporation, which manages $135 million in utility industry investments, where he has been responsible for monitoring investments in companies in the telecommunications, software and energy industries. Prior to that he was a principal at Venture Investment Management Company, LLC (VIMAC), which manages "angel" investments in early stage companies. 

At VIMAC Mr. Osborn focused on energy, environmental, education and healthcare opportunities. Mr. Osborn has been an entrepreneur in the environmental and energy field, founding and managing an electric vehicle distribution subsidiary for a major utility company and starting a business development consulting firm. He also co-managed a venture capital fund for automaker BMW and was a management consultant with Arthur D. Little, where he led a consulting practice involved with new energy technologies and managed due diligence for investment companies evaluating acquisition candidates. 

Prior to his consulting work, Mr. Osborn practiced law and managed a state government office promoting solar energy. Mr. Osborn sits on the boards of several start-up and expansion-stage companies, including Evergreen Solar, Inc. (photovoltaic modules), World Power Technologies, Inc. (power quality instrumentation), Evolutionary Technologies, Inc. (enterprise software for applications integration), Surgical Sealants, Inc. (surgical wound products), Fingerlakes Aquaculture LLC (recycled-water aquaculture), and Conservation Services Group (energy efficiency services). He is a founding Trustee of the Domini Social Equity Fund and Board Member of Investors’ Circle, where he has also chaired the Selection Committee that chooses companies to present to members for investment. He has a BA from Princeton University (field) and a JD from George Washington Law School.

Elizabeth Bailey, Principal

Elizabeth Bailey joined Commons Capital in the fall of 2001 and has focused on investment opportunities in the health care, education and environment sectors. Her work spans deal sourcing, due diligence, investment recommendations, and portfolio management. 

Elizabeth has worked with numerous health care companies in the medical device, biotech, services and IT segments, with a particular emphasis on those developing solutions for diagnosing and treating neglected diseases. She also leads the fund’s K-12 and corporate training investments and serves as a board observer to Apex Learning. Elizabeth currently serves or has served as a board observer to CodeRyte, Combinent Biomedical Systems, HistoRx, Medical Metrx Solutions, TelaDoc and Valeo Medical. In the environmental arena, Elizabeth has focused on the natural products segment and serves as a board observer to Niman Ranch. 

Before Commons Capital, Elizabeth was a Consultant with Stax, Inc., a Cambridge, MA-based management consulting firm, where she worked with the firm’s private equity clients and their portfolio companies. Elizabeth began her career in Massachusetts state government and holds a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a BA from Brown University.
